Two cantatas composed for the Feast of the Reformation and one for the Feast of St. Michael exemplify Bach’s sacred writing. Three-hundred years later, in honor of the tercentennial of the Augsburg Confession, Mendelssohn’s “Reformation” Symphony was conceived to celebrate the richness of Protestantism.”
